Eurofighter RAF Typhoon, German Luftwaffe Taifun, Italian Tifone, Spanish Ejercito del Aire Espanol Tifon

The Eurofighter roots go back to the early 1970's when the RAF were looking for a replacement for the SEPECAT Jaguar and Hawker-Siddely Harrier in the ground attack role. The RAF wanted a fighter that had STOVL (short take of vertical landing) capabilities. A rethink in 1972 meant that the new emphasis was for an air superiority fighter with STOVL capabilities. Britain needed partners in the venture and after talks with France and Germany the STOVL capability was dropped. A separate requirement for a STOVL fighter gave rise to the Hawker-Siddely Harrier GR.5 followed by the Hawker-Siddely Harrier GR.7 and now the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter which is due to see service in 2008.

Britain wanted the new European Fighter to be a multi-role aircraft capable to replacing both the SEPECAT Jaguar and F-4 Phantom fighter strike system. The RAF wanted to take delivery of the new Eurofighter in 1987. France wanted a lightweight small carrier capable ground attack aircraft. They already had the Mirage fighter jet program. Germany wanted an air superiority fighter but was not very interested in ground attack usage. France eventually left the project. Italy and Spain joined. .

The resulting four-nation Eurofighter Typhoon is a foreplane delta-wing, beyond-visual-range, close air fighter aircraft with surface attack capability. The Typhoon has a 'supercruise' capability flying at sustained speeds of over Mach 1 without the use of afterburner. RAF Typhoon fighters will replace Squadrons equipped with Tornado F.3 Air Defence Variants. The RAF Typhoon ground attack variant will replace Squadrons equipped with SEPECAT Jaguars.

The German Luftwaffe present air combat fighter role is fulfilled by F-4ICE Phantom IIs and a smaller number of MiG-29's (in service since the West and East German forces united). The Luftwaffe uses Interdictor Strike (IDS) Tornados in a ground attack role, reconnaisance and electronic warfare roles. The Eurofighter Typhoon (Taifun in German) will replace all these aircraft by 2014. The Spanish Air Force, Ejercito del Aire Espanol Eurofighter Typhoon (or Tifon in Spanish) will replace all their existing F-18 Hornet's currently in-service. Italy's Eurofighter Typhoon (Tifone in Italian) will replace their ageing F-104S ASA Starfighters and leased Tornado F.3 Air Defence Variants.

The Eurofighter Typhoon has an internally-mounted Mauser BK27mm gun. It is a revolver gun system with a linkless-closed ammunition feed system. There are 13 hard points for weapon carriage, four under each wing and five under the fuselage on the Eurofighter Typhoon. Depending on its role and mission, the Typhoon fighter can carry a mix of missiles, air-superiority beyond visual range, shorter range air-to-air missiles, air interdiction missiles, cruise missiles, anti-radar missiles, anti-armour missiles and anti-ship missiles. The typhoon has numerous on board countermeasures, front and rear missile approach warners, supersonically capable towed decoy systems, laser warning receivers, chaff and flare dispensing system.
