The Lockheed C-130 Hercules multi task transport Military plane The Lockheed C130 Hercules plane was developed to fulfil the needs of the allies in the Korean War. The USAF did not have the ability to move troops, stores and equipment using the short rough airfields that are sometimes the only available option in the war zone. Lockheed aircraft was awarded the contract. The first flight of the Hercules YC-130 happened on 23rd August 1954 at Lockheed's plant in Burbank, California. The 463rd Troop Carrier Wing at Ardmore AFB, Oklahoma were the first to receive the new C130 Hercules. The plane performed better than expected especially as it was not a jet engine powered plane. It was very manoeuvrable and the new engines provided a lot of power so great loads could be lifted. It was capable of operating from rough, dirt strips and roads. It only needed 800 feet to get airborne. The versatile C-130 was originally designed as an assault transport but was adapted for a variety of missions, including: special operations (low-level and attack), close air support and air interdiction, mid-air space capsule recovery, search and rescue (SAR), aerial refueling of helicopters, weather mapping and reconnaissance, electronic surveillance, fire fighting, aerial spraying, Arctic/Antarctic ice resupply and natural disaster relief missions. Currently, the Hercules primarily performs the intratheater portion of the tactical airlift mission. This medium-range aircraft is capable of operating from rough, dirt strips and is the prime transport for paratroops and equipment drops into hostile areas. The most infamous conversion of the Herc was into a gunship known as the Lockheed AC-130A "Spectre" Gunship during the Vietnam war.
The newer version of the Hercules the C-130B had beefed-up landing gear for assault landings, four-bladed propellers which increased power and additional fuel in auxiliary tanks in the wings. The C-130E had all of the features of the C- 30B with the addition of extra-large pylon fuel tanks in each wing. The C-130E became the most widely-used of all Hercules. Civilian version have been used with great effect in remote areas for tasks such as the construction of the Alaska Oil Pipeline or delivering aid in places like Africa. Lockheed's C-130 Hercules has had the longest production run of any airplane in history. It is still in production after 43 years. A new version, the C-130J, featuring a glass cockpit, digital avionics and a new propulsion system with a six-bladed propeller will soon be the standard version. The C-130J entered active service with the USAF in April 2004 and was first used in a conflict zone in December 2004.
