Royal Air Force Westland Belvedere HC1 twin rotor heavy lift transport helicopter

The Westland Wessex HC2 helicopter is a turbine powered upgrade of an American Sikorsky S-58 general purpose helicopter capable of ground attack, troop transport and air medical evacuation roles. It first entered service in January 1964 with No.18 Squadron at RAF Odiham. Westland made two variants of the HC2 for the Queens Flight designated HCC4. It had additional sound proofing, VIP interior finish, furnishings and a fold down step. The first official flight of the Royal HCC-4 Wessex helicopter took place on 1st July 1969 in support of the investiture of HRH Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle in North Wales and were painted in their distinctive red and dark blue paint scheme. The Wessex was withdrawn from service in 1998.
