The British Airways London Eye big wheel

The British Airways London Eye is great feat of construction and design. The 32 capsules can carry over 15,000 visitors per day. It only requires a total power of 500kw to turn the Londoneye which is the same as only six light bulbs. It weighs the same as 350 London red double decker buses. Originally it was conceived by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield of Marks Barfield Architects as an entry for a year 2000, millennium landmark competition The project took six years to turn it into a reality. It takes over 200 people to run and maintain the wheel. The wheel never stops and you get on and off the capsules seamlessly as if you were on non moving land. You can book tickets on line or at the ticket office but get there early to avoid the lines.

It is next to old county hall which is now a complex of London hotels and motels as well as the home of the London Aquarium and MacDonald’s fast food restaurant. Waterloo international railway station is only minutes away and you can pick up the Eurostar international TGV channel tunnel train that can take you on a city break or short holiday to Paris, Lille, Brussels and the South of France. On the other side of the River Thames you can see the Houses of Parliament in Parliament Square and hear Big Ben chime. You can also see old Scotland Yard. That is the Red brick and white stripped building. It is now government offices. The Metropolitan Police moved into a new modern tower block called new Scotland Yard or NSY in the 1960s. It can be seen in Victoria Road.
