British Trains

Many people have a fascination with trains from the train spotter to the three year old playing with his Thomas the Tank Engine railway set. Britain is blessed with conservation groups who restore old steam engines, track, stations, points and signal boxes. They take the same care in restoring the passenger carriages as they do the freight trucks. The effect that the delightful stories by the Rev W Awdry and the every day lives of Thomas, Gordon, Harold, Douglas, Bill, Ben, Spencer, Skarloey, Peter, Sam, Annabel, Clarence, Percy and the Fat Controller on the Island of Sodor should not be underestimated.  The other famous childhood television series that then became a series of books is Ivor the Engine with Jones the Steam, Di station and Idris the dragon by Oliver Postgate. Both of these great series have influenced thousands of people and started their interest in trains. Some start a more active interest in trains by playing with train sets, like the wooden Brio sets, plastic Tomy battery sets to the highly realistic Hornby railway systems.
