Berlin's Bridges Schlossbrucke Moltkebrucke and Liebknechtbrucke

Berlin’s Bridges suffered server damage during World War 2 but they are still worth seeing. The sculptures restored to their former Prussian Glory are very attractive. The most famous bridge is the Schlossbrucke but there are many others that cross Berlin’s Spree River and canals. One of the best ways to see them in their glory is to take a Berlin tourist river boat sightseeing cruise. If you walk over the Moltkebrucke bridge you will see that it is guarded by a huge griffin holding a shield adorned with the Prussian Eagle. Have a look at the cherubs on the bridge. They are dressed in a military style and hold up lamps. On the Liebknechtbruckle bridge look out for the ornamental bear designs.

Berliner Dom - Berlin's neo-Baroque Cathedral

Berliner Dom is one of the more dramatic Berlin landmarks. It attractively backs onto the River Spree and has a pleasant grass area in front. It was built between 1747 and 1750 but the present neo-Baroque structure is the work of Julius Raschdorff and dates from 1894 to 1905. It suffered severe bombe damage during the World War II. It has been restored to a simplified form from the original design. I normally do not like going into cathedrals but this one was a breath of fresh air from the normal major city cathedrals you find throughout northern Europe.

Fernsehtrum - Berlin’s television tower

Berlin’s television tower the Fernsehtrum, known locally as the toothpick, is still the tallest building in Berlin. It was built in 1969 as a very visible symbol of the success of the socialist East German regime. There is a revolving café at the top of the tower where you can can get a birds eye view of the city whilst drinking an expensive cup of coffee. You have to pay to go up the tower.

Berlin capital of Germany Ideal tourist city break vacation destination

Berlin capital of the new Germany, is an ideal tourist city break vacation destination. I was not looking forward to visiting Berlin. Apart from the Brandenberg Gate and Check Point Charlie I did not think there would be much to see. Boy was I wrong. I was shocked how attractive Berlin city is. The best parts were in the old East Berlin. Prior to the wall coming down a trip to West Berlin would have been very disappointing as most of the best bits were on the communist side. If you go to Berlin looking for the Berlin wall you are going to be very disappointed as nearly all sections of it have been demolished and erased from the landscape. There are lots of hotels, motels and guest houses to suit all pockets. Traveling to Berlin is very easy. The Airport has its own railway station and you can travel to the heart of Berlin with ease. Try a coffee and marzipan filled croissants, whilst you are waiting for the train.
