Russian Soviet SU-152 self propelled armoured Assault Gun, infantry support weapon and tank destroyer of World War Two's Eastern Front

During pre-production this Heavy assault gun was known as the KV-14. It was based on a KV tank chassis unlike the SU100 and SU122 SPG’s that were based on a T34 chassis. It’s 152mm ML-20 gun had a muzzle velocity of 655 m/s and was capable of penetrating 110mm of vertical armour from 2000 meters away. Although this self propelled gun was designed for close infantry support like the German Stug III it was also used as a tank destroyer. It could only manage a 2 shots per minute rate of fire because the shot was a multiple part loading shot not one self contained shell. The cartridge and shell were loaded separately.

Mass production started in March 1943 and it was given the name of SU-152. By the end of December 1943 703 had been made. The 152 mm gun was a highly effective antitank gun. The SU152 was given the nickname ‘Zveroboy’ or Animal Killer because during the battle of Kursk one SU-152 equipped regiment killed 12 Tiger tanks and 7 Elephants. It had also destroyed some Panther V’s. It was an effective weapon against infantry because it fired a very large shell. Initially the SU-152 had no machine gun, but later a 12.7 mm ''Degtyarev-Shpagin Large-caliber''' Soviet  heavy anti-aircraft machine gun, was added on an anti-aircraft mount. The later ISU-152 used the same gun as the SU-152, but on the hull of an IS-1 tank instead of a KV-1.
